Product Info:
With the total domination of Holden in the 1976 Bathurst by taking the first 7 places, Ford were coming to the mountain with something to prove in 1977.
The new XC Falcon was released in July 1976 and the motor sports governing body CAMS did not recognise the transition from XB to XC until July 1977. This allowed the racing teams who had been running XB GT Falcons (which had being racing for over three years) to upgrade to the Falcon Hardtop 500 GS. The problem was this change over happened mid-season and the battle for the Championship did not allow the teams any time to build new cars. The race teams were left to race in either the existing XB GT trim for the remainder of the season, or update them with the new XC body updates.
The transition from XB to XC prompted John Goss Racing to expand to a two-car team for the first time. The second Goss prepared Falcon was to be driven by Sir Jack Brabham and his son Geoff. As a warm up for Bathurst John Goss teamed up with Sir Jack Brabham for the Sandown 400. The Goss/Brabham car qualified well, and had the race pace to match. But their good work would come undone when the engine self destructed.
Following Holden’s strong showing at Sandown, Ford looked to copy some of Holdens improvements by amending their homologation papers of the Falcon Hardtop 500 GS. The improvements included a reverse facing hood scoop, Thermatic fans and air ducting to the brakes with flexible tubing. Many teams turned up to Bathurst with these improvements added to their cars, but they were force to remove them as CAMS deemed they had not been produced in significant numbers to be eligible for use at Bathurst.
The 1977 Bathurst was to be Sir Jack Brabham’s second outing at the Mountain, his debut the previous year was a disaster. Teamed with ex-F1 driver Sir Stirling Moss in a Torana, the car was involved in an accident when the car failed to get off the starting grid. They were able to repair the car and continue racing, but it was short lived with the car lasting 37 laps before the engine failed.
The Brabham/Brabham combination qualified for Bathurst in 9th position with a time of 2m26.9s, less than 2 second away from pole sitters Brock/Brock, with the XCs of Bond/Hamilton and Moffat/Ickx in 2nd and 3rd Positions. Qualifying in the Top 10 was an excellent result for the Brabham car as they were able to out qualifying their team mates Goss/Pescarolo who sat further back in 16th position.
The race was fought at a frantic pace, after the dust had settled the #4 Brabham car had put itself into a position for a Top 5 finish. Unfortunately the car was to suffer rocker problems and a lengthy pit stop put the car out of contention. The car would continue to complete 141 laps of the 6.213km track finishing in 18th position overall (9th in Class A). The high attrition rate of the Falcons meant that it was the fourth Falcon home with seven Falcons failing to finish.
The 1977 Bathurst would become one of the most famous races ever held at the mountain with the memorable ‘Form Finish 1-2’ of the Moffat Ford Dealers team crossing the line together with Alan Moffat taking his 4th Bathurst victory.
